In the United States, the number of single mothers is on the rise. The U.S. Census Bureau reported in 2000 that one-third of all children were being raised by a single parent, with 80% of this number being single mothers.
While divorce accounts for the majority of children being raised by single parents, over 40% of all single mothers have never been married.

The stigma generally attached to single mothers has been eroded over the past few years. Celebrities, whose choices to become single mothers have been highly publicized, are largely responsible for this change in society?s attitude toward single mothers. An opinion gaining ground is that, rather than being seen as a failure for failing to attract a man with which to raise a family, many single mothers are successful women who know their own mind, know what they want and how to get it.

Scientific and medical advances and breakthroughs in reproductive technology have given single women new, more palatable options in becoming pregnant. The increase in quality sperm donors and more advanced techniques in keeping donated sperm viable for longer periods of time give single women a wider range of choices and a higher comfort level in choosing artificial insemination. The technology of artificial insemination has also advanced, increasing the likelihood that the woman will become pregnant.

Adoption is also becoming a viable alternative for women wishing to become single mothers. Many adoption agencies have changed their policies on allowing single parent adoptions and will now consider financially stable single women as suitable to be adoptive mothers.

Improved conditions in the workplace also are giving more women the option to become single mothers. Rather than the blatant discrimination against single mothers that many employers practiced in the past, many employers now offer on-site daycare. Special rooms are available on the job site in which lactating mothers can express breast milk, job-sharing programs and flexible work schedules are available in order to accommodate mothers who work outside the home.

Single mothers do have their critics. There are sectors who feel that women who have deliberately chosen to be single mothers are women who have not had the time, the opportunity or the resources to attract a man with whom they would want to raise a family. There is a strong following that believes that children of single mothers are at a disadvantage. The erosion of the traditional family is a major issue in these sectors, who feel that children of single mothers turn out to have higher incidences of out-of-wedlock births and divorce due to the influences of a single parent family.

Most families do not want to hear that their teenage daughter is pregnant. However, teenagers of different cultures can face more severe expectations. When a teenage single mother's family is an ethnic minority or of a particular faith that has cultural beliefs that value virginity or has specific maternal expectations, her choices may become limited and her life planned for her from the moment she announces she is pregnant. In worst-case scenarios, her family may not support her and turn her out as a disgrace, or seek to harm her before the child is born.

The Issue Of Virginity

Some cultures won't talk about sex in the home. Sex education, especially for females, is not encouraged. However, the cultural standard of virginity may be upheld. These leaves many females in these cultures that value virginity not enough information on protection of birth control should they become sexually active.

In addition, once a teenager becomes pregnant, the teenage single mother's family may insist the adolescent marry early or live at home to raise the child. Adoption and abortion may not be considered options in different cultures or faiths. Either way, the teenage mother's education is curtailed and her chances at becoming a stable, independent provider for her children are stalled.

Other cultures may find the teenage mother's condition so offensive to their family honor that they may try to harm the expectant mother or abandon her. It's important to have counseling for the teenage single mother's family as well as the adolescent mother to take into account cultural and religious belief systems if this is the case.

The Issue Of Marriage

In some cultures, a teenage must marry to protect the family honor. It doesn't matter what her age is, if she's pregnant, she has to marry. In the U.S., minors aren't allowed to marry without the consent of their parents. Marriage is seen differently in other cultures, and arranged marriages for a teenage girl to a much older men are arranged to avoid having a teenage single mother, a cause of much disgrace in other cultures.

However, once she is pregnant a teenage single mother's family will pressure her into marrying if their culture demands it. The lack of support for unwed mothers in other cultures causes emotional trauma and can lead to a suicide of a young single mother.

Counselors and schools that deal with other cultures are often not aware of the difference in how different cultures influences the expectations of a teenage single mother's family. As more and more immigrants come to America to seek a better life, the issue of teenage single mothers and the different cultural norms and expectations can make getting help for teen mothers a more sensitive issue requiring more in-depth cultural understanding and counseling.

Although the rate of teenage pregnancy has decreased substantially in the last few years, there are still plenty of teenagers becoming mothers yearly. The U.S. still has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates of all the industrialized countries. But, welfare for single mothers has significantly decreased over the years; a teenage single mother still has to find the resources she needs to overcome multiple challenges that now lie in her path.

Medical care is of the biggest importance in the life of a teenage single mother. Most teenagers have poor nutritional habits and often drink alcohol and smoke. These habits can adversely affect the health of her baby making the care for it much more challenging in the years to come. In addition, a teenage mother may not be biologically mature enough because of her pelvis size to birth a child naturally and may require a Cesarean. Getting the teenage single mother good prenatal care is vitally important, not only for her health but also for the health of her baby.

Once the child is born, the young single mother must look towards establishing proper support systems to be able to go back and complete her high school education. This may mean that she starts working to earn money to pay for childcare while she is also completing her high school education. Very rarely is a teenage mother lucky enough to have her own built-in familial support system that is willing to look after her children while she goes to school.

Sometimes ethnic and familial considerations will consider an unwed single mother a disgrace to the family. In which case, she may be abandoned or even at risk for harm in her own home. Different cultures view unwed pregnancies differently. If she is without the family support system a teenage single mother may be facing homelessness as well as pregnancy.

The ability of a teenage single mother to locate resources for herself and her child is paramount to their survival. Federal assistance is available but many programs now advocate workfare instead of welfare, a difficult proposition for a teenage single mother with no job skills or education. Many faith-based programs are stepping in to try to bridge the gap between the enormous needs of a teenage mother and community resources available. Unfortunately, there are far too many young single mothers for the services to be adequate for all single mothers.

The Federal government recognizes that teenage pregnancy is an issue that affects the well being of this country, however, they have focused on preventing teenage pregnancies, which has been highly successful. The number of teenage single mothers has decreased significantly, but statistics still show that 1 in 3 teenagers becomes pregnant before the age of 20. There is still much that can be done for these teenagers as they seek to overcome multiple challenges that they face before them in life.

While everyone knows it's hard to be a single mother, young single mothers have almost impossible hurdles to overcome to keep from falling into poverty. Young single mothers usually are comprised of young adults between the ages of 13 to 20 years of age. They are the segment of the population most likely to end up on welfare with 75% of them going on public assistance within five years of the birth of their first child.

Single mothers who have become so through the death of a spouse or divorce, or even by choice, often have gotten to the stage in their lives when they have finished high school and have been in the employment market previously and obtained some skills. However, young single mothers often become pregnant before finishing high school and subsequently they drop out. This impacts their ability to get employment or move up the economic ladder for their entire lifetime, if the situation is not rectified.

Unfortunately, it may be difficult for young single mothers to return to school after the birth of a child. Due to their youth, many single mothers have poor nutritional status and habits like drinking alcohol or smoking that can adversely affect the health of the baby once it's born. There are also studies that babies born to teenage mothers often suffer from low birth weight, which leads to further health complications down the road. As the children grow, the statistics show that many will be at risk for being retain one grade in school or doing poorly on scholastic achievement tests. While the male children have a higher risk of being imprisoned, the female children have a higher risk of repeating the single mother cycle themselves.

Cultural issues of propriety and faith may also keep a single mother from returning to complete her education. She may be influenced by her parents to either get married quickly to the child's father or to return home to raise her child without finishing school. Either way, her education is halted and her ability to earn income for her children is significantly derailed. She more than likely will end up on welfare.

There are statistics that show that even after young single mothers reach the age of 30 only 1.5% of them mange to earn a college degree. Many programs aim at trying to keep the mother in school, but childcare becomes a primary issue as it is with all single mothers. With a limited support system at home and lost time in school, the lives of young single mothers are very difficult.

Young single mothers face a number of obstacles to successfully parenting their child while trying to achieve their own self-sufficiency. On the one hand, a child needs a mother's attention, but on the other a young single mother needs to be working to earn a living to support the child. This delicate balancing act can be even more precarious when the young single mother is a teenager who hasn't even completed high school yet. With minimal education in a society that demands higher education and few job skills, a young single mother may end up caught in a poverty trap that can get tighter each year. The only way out is by having a young single mother's right attitude. Face it, motherhood is hard and single motherhood is much harder.

Traits To Develop For A Young Single Mother's Right Attitude

* A thick skin with an open mind
* Persistence, persistence, persistence
* Ability To establish goals and follow through
* Courage to work hard without any guarantees of success

A Thick Skin With An Open Mind

Being a young single mother is stereotyped in this society as being social burden or a personal failure. Many young single mothers end up on welfare, with estimates suggesting 75% of teenage single mothers being on welfare at least five years after the birth of their first child. Getting public assistance can be humiliating, and there is a lot of discrimination in the workplace against young single mothers. A young single mother's right attitude in the face of these circumstances is to have faith in herself, while being willing to get help from people when she needs it. She must have a thick skin with an open mind to reach out and begin to establish support systems for herself and her child.

Persistence, Persistence, Persistence

While it may be difficult to persist in getting an education after one has their first child, it's paramount if that mother is the sole provider for her family. A young single mother's right attitude is a mixture of doggedness and faith. She must be persistent in finding creative ways to manage her motherly responsibilities while planning for the future of her little family.

Ability To Establish Goals And Follow Through

This ability to plan for the future takes some degree of optimism. While the incidence of depression for single mothers is 40% greater than her married counterparts, a single mother has to take responsibility for her future and set some goals for her education and job training to better her circumstances.

Courage To Work Hard Without Any Guarantees Of Success

After establishing goals and being persistent in getting her and her child's needs met, the single mother will need to have the courage to face a life that has no guarantees. A young single mother's right attitude must be courageous if she is to succeed at all, however. She may work hard and encounter multiple obstacles in her way. Every step forward may be fraught with perils for two steps backwards. The only way to succeed, however, is to take those steps and build her skills, confidence, and self-esteem one day at a time.

Young single mothers are just like any other teens. They eat poorly, sometimes drink, or smoke. They're influenced by peer pressure to become sexually active and then when they become pregnant, those same influences can be damaging to her child. After the baby is born a young single mother and friends may part ways. The mother may face alienation and ridicule from the same friends that helped to influence the same behavior that got her in trouble.

Sometimes, the baby's father is amongst the young single mother's friends. He may even take an active interest in helping to rear the baby. If a teenage mom continues to be sexually active, her chances of having a second child increase dramatically. With 1 in 4 adolescents having a second child within 24 months of the first, a young single mother needs good information on birth control. If one of her friends is the baby's father, she must take precautions not to get pregnant again.

On the other hand, once a teenager becomes a mother, she may want to quit school. At this point, she may have some loyal friends who can make the difference between her decision to stay and complete school or quit all together. With the support and understanding of friends in high school who are her own age, a single mother may not feel intimidated to return to school. A young single mother and friends who influence her positively has more motivation to succeed against the odds.

A young single mother and friends who care about her can be the best type of emotional support system for her. It will help her in times of stress to know that others care for her. Sometimes, the teenage mother is paired in mentoring programs with adults to help her gain valuable parenting skills and provide on-site daycare while she attends classes. In these instances, these mentors can become great friends and provide positive influences to young single mothers.

A young single mother and friends who are there for her to cheer her on, help her keep striving to finish her education, or who don't belittle her situation, may be an incentive to keep the mother trying to improve her circumstances. A young single mother and friends who influence her negatively can cause her to shirk her responsibilities and eventually lead serious problems with drugs and alcohol. It's important for parents or mentors supervising young single mothers to try to steer them into making good choices when it comes to their circle of friends, for the mother and the baby's sake.

It's become evident that in America, the one big thing that can undermine your financial success is not divorce, death, or illness, but rather being a single mother. Single moms may land in this category through divorce, death, or an incapacitated spouse, but these are not the essential reasons why a single mother loses earning power. She loses it because of an inherent bias and prejudice in American business that stereotypes single mothers and discriminates openly against them.

Many single moms have been too exhausted and over-worked to notice, but now this is becoming a major issue in the fight for woman's rights. We live in a society that demands that in order to succeed we must play the corporate game, get better jobs, better pay so we can put our children into better educational institutions. However, this only works if you are married.

If you are a single mother, the perception is that you are a business risk, and in many states like New Jersey, it is legal to ask the marital status and number of children of a job applicant. Business owners claim this allows them to refuse to hire single mothers and pay health care costs for their dependents. Or, if they do choose to hire them, to deliberately pay them less to make up for perceived health care expenses. But, because it is legal this is not seen as discrimination. That this inequality exists and is legal in our society has many single moms absolutely fuming with rage.

Single mothers were asked to get off welfare and go back into the workforce, but the workforce is decidedly biased against them. Many single moms work over 40 hours a week to support their children with minimal help from the state or deadbeat dads. Yet, they are hired at lower wages than single women or married women, if they are hired at all. They have minimal support and must hire someone to care for the children when they are working. If they get sick, the situation becomes desperate both in terms of income and childcare.

In 2006, the census estimates that over 10 million Americans are single mothers. Many of these single moms are starting to band together in local organizations to help other single mothers. Babysitting clubs, financial and social services are a few of the benefits these clubs provide. Other single moms are petitioning their public officials to change laws that make it legal to ask a mother's marital status or if she has children. There is a very big grass-roots movement of single moms rising after taken care of their children. Now, they are looking out for other single mothers like themselves and helping them up the ladder to success.

It is very difficult for members of traditional families to understand the special difficulties and needs of Christian single mothers. Although the Christian community takes a special responsibility in helping to support the material needs of single mothers, materials needs do not fully supply the needs of the Christian single mother. The unusual demands on the time and energy of the single mother put her at a disadvantage socially and she needs special understanding from the Christian community.

Christian single mothers, as all single mothers, are on a treadmill existence. They must work at least one full-time job and often a part-time job in order to satisfy the financial needs of the family. After the demands of the outside jobs are satisfied they must come home to care for the home and family. Single mothers rarely get a full night?s sleep, much less time for themselves to relax or to socialize or to devote to prayer. Prayer does not come easy for a chronically exhausted person, yet a Christian single mother especially needs the stimulus of a spiritual connection. A good alternative to prayer is to read small installments daily of spiritual texts. Another alternative is to join a prayer group that meets regularly. Although the prayer group is another item in a busy schedule, it does provide an atmosphere more conducive to prayer for an exhausted mother.

In the Christian community, unfortunately, a Christian single mother will often have to deal with condemnation. Christian single mothers who have never been married will deal with this condemnation most often however, divorced mothers will also suffer. The Christian single mother must not give in to the feelings of guilt that this condemnation will engender. Talks with pastors and prayer will help most of all when this burden becomes too great to bear alone.

The need to be forgiving is a special challenge for many Christian single mothers. The animosity of a divorce can be especially hurtful and cause deep feelings of resentment. The condemnation of others will add to the feelings of resentment and lack of self-worth. Women who have never been married may harbor feelings of resentment against the father who is not bearing any of the burdens of the family. Forgiveness is of the utmost importance, no matter what the situation because of the great healing powers of forgiveness and because it is central to the Christian faith. While forgiveness is difficult under these circumstances, it is the key to achieving a state of thankfulness and enjoyment of the life God has given us.

Many women know when they sign up for the military that even after their tour of duty is done, they may be re-activated and deployed at any time. It's still a difficult family dilemma if a single mother is the sole source of support for her children. Whereas a single mother in civilian life may have daycare problems on a day-to-day basis, single moms in the military if deployed need to make childcare arrangements that can span months or years.

In cases of divorce, often child custody is the biggest issue to determine and years of legal and financial negotiations may be torn asunder when single moms in the military are deployed. The non-custodial father or other relatives may be called upon to take charge of minor child they weren't expecting to have in their lives. If both parents who are divorced are in the military and both are deployed, the situation becomes dire.

The issue is addressed by the military in requiring all soldiers to have a Family Care Plan put together in the event they are recalled to active duty. This plan is mandatory for everyone, even single moms in the military.

It includes several forms that must be filled out and that all single moms in the military should keep current at all times:

The family care plan: It is the detailed plan a soldier is expected to make in advance in the event they are recalled to active duty.

A power of attorney: It gives legal authority for the child care of the minors. It establishes who the guardian is and what their rights are. It allows for that relationship to be established for extended periods of time.

Certificate of acceptance as guardian or escort: The form that verifies that the guardian has accepted their responsibility and has been made aware of the circumstances of the family care plan.

Application for uniformed services identification card DEERS enrollment: This provides military benefits to the children while the parent is gone.

Authorization to start, stop, or change allotment, for active duty or retired personnel: This allots a portion of the soldier's pay to family members to support them while the parent is absent.

Letters of instruction: This is all the information important to the soldier's family for legal, medical, and household purposes. Things like tax information, service providers, bills that need to be paid, car registrations can all be included in the letters of instructions.

Family care plan counseling list: A form that verifies the soldier has been counseled on the mandatory nature and information required in a family care plan.

Although single moms in the military may not want to think about the potential of being re-activated, it is a situation that is occurring more and more frequently for people in the military. Having a thorough and up-to-date family care plan ready at all times can alleviate some of the stress of being deployed and help ensure that the children's needs are met.

Single mothers are raising the next generation of children. The statistics in the 2000 Census show that every year the number of single parents are increasing dramatically in American society, with single mothers continuing to outnumber single fathers by a 3 to 1 margin. Also, there are now more single women buying real estate then single males. Many of these single women are single mothers.

The reasons single mothers buy real estate are multiple, but often having a stable roof over their children's head is their number one priority. Should a single mother end up homeless, her children can be removed from her custody and placed in foster homes. Getting them back would mean that the parent must meet requirements for housing for single mothers that she may not be able to afford.

A single mother's housing requirements include:

* Safety
* Affordability
* Low-maintenance

Many single mothers can get public assistance and vouchers for housing, but they end up in bad neighborhoods further damaging their chances for a stable family life. Requirements for housing for single mother must include a safe environment for her children if she wants to avoid exposing the children to gangs, drugs, and other types of crimes that can influence their future in negative manners.

Although safety may be a primary issue in housing for a single mother, she may not be able to afford a neighborhood in her city, which is safe. The trade-off for safety is affordability. Many programs now offer housing for single mother that is both safe and affordable. It's just a matter of connecting with the right resources within the community find out what is available.

Many single mothers prefer apartments because there are no hidden maintenance fees. If they are in a position to buy their own home, they may opt for town homes to reduce the need for maintenance. Many homebuilders are now taking their cue from the emergence of more single parent households and providing low-maintenance communities. However, there is something special about having a single family home that all Americans dream about owning someday. A single mother is no different except that housing for single mother does have to be safe, affordable, and low maintenance.

If a single parent isn't aware of these requirements for housing for single mother, then they may end up over-reaching their financial capabilities and experiencing and eviction or foreclosure. No more than 30% of one's income should be put towards housing expenses and one should calculate the costs of home maintenance into that equation as well.
